What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy helps you live your best life at home, at work – and everywhere else. It’s about being able to do the things you want and have to do. That could mean helping you overcome challenges learning at school, going to work, playing sport or simply doing the dishes. Everything is focused on your wellbeing and your ability to participate in activities” (RCOT, 2024).

Occupational therapists are in a unique position within healthcare as we are focused on activity and independence. We are experts at breaking down activity into its component parts which allows us to methodically analyse difficulties and develop effective solutions.

Meet the Neuro Focus Therapy team

We’re Kurt and Hannah, occupational therapists who share a passion for supporting neurodivergent children, young people, and adults in ways that truly make a difference. Based in Mid Essex, we offer a wide range of services and are happy to visit homes within Essex. In some cases, we can also travel further depending on your needs.

Alongside us, we work with a small and dedicated team of associates — highly skilled clinicians and consultants with extensive experience in autism and ADHD assessment and support.

It matters to us that every clinician we collaborate with shares our ethos: a neuro-affirming, strengths-based approach that celebrates individuality and focuses on wellbeing, confidence, and growth.

Hannah Westwood-Loftus

I am a Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered occupational therapist and a member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists. I have 19 years of experience working as an occupational therapist within the NHS, paediatric and adult social care and independent roles. I am very passionate about what I do.

My main area of focus is developing and delivering specialist autism diagnostic assessments and pathways. Having worked in autism and ADHD diagnostic services for many years, I recognised that traditional assessment approaches don’t always meet everyone’s needs. Over the past five years, I have been creating an alternative approach that reduces anxiety through low-demand and low-arousal methods.
This way of working makes it possible for individuals to fully participate in assessments and support, regardless of factors such as demand avoidance, selective mutism, or other differences in communication and interaction.
I believe strongly in collaboration, taking time to listen to parents, carers, and individuals themselves, ensuring that every voice is respected and valued throughout the process.

My specialist interest and current role is supporting children and adults who are neurodivergent. I also have an interest in sensory processing needs, motor co-ordination differences (developmental coordination disorder) and neurological disorders.

Another passion, is supporting other clinicians and professionals in developing their understanding of autism and ADHD using neuro-affirming approaches.

I am very passionate about using strengths-based approaches and advocate for change within education and healthcare settings that doesn’t include the social-deficit theory of autism.

I live with my husband Kurt, my daughter Betsy and our dog Nola. We are a neuro divergent family and therefore have lived experience alongside our professional roles. I enjoy gaming, doing puzzle books, eating chocolate and continuously learning.

I am a dedicated Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered occupational therapist and a member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists. I have over a decade of experience in both NHS and independent settings. In the past, I have worked in acute services, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and led a specialised occupational therapy stroke rehabilitation service within the NHS. I currently work doing independent practice within Adult Social Care, and I work within an autism diagnostic service delivering a specialist assessment pathway.

I am experienced in a wide range of fields, including autism diagnostic assessment, both cognitive and physical rehabilitation, assessment of equipment, postural management, specialist seating, home and environmental assessment, fatigue management, manual handling, and many more.

I am happy to work with individuals, family members, care agencies, and any other relevant persons to achieve a desired outcome. I have a stepdaughter who is 10 years old, and I love exercise, gaming, films, and being outside with my dog. And yes, I am married to Hannah.
